Children develop their understanding of numbers through counting objects. Meaningful activities in which children count objects one by one, helps in developing their number sense, connected to quantity.
After children have had enough experience of counting one by one and have developed a sense of quantity of numbers till 20, they are ready to get into the world of structured counting which lays the basis for doing addition and subtraction mentally.
